Sumba Island located on the east of Bali but strangely enough most visitors don’t take the time to visit. Those who do make the trip here are usually surfers, as Sumba has a surprising surf scene that many people don’t even realize exists. Coupled with its pounding waves, Sumba also serves up some gorgeous azure waters and white sands, and the most amazing things about the beaches here is that you will probably be left to enjoy them on your own.

As if that wasn’t a good enough reason to visit Sumba, you can also take the opportunity to learn more about the local culture which allows you a fascinating look at structure like megalithic tombs that house the remains of members of the royal family. The traditions and even the houses are different from much of the rest of Indonesia and if you are interested in seeing a different side of this massive archipelago then this is one spot not to miss off the itinerary.

Other attractions in Sumba are usually of the natural variety, and you can expect pretty hillsides, limpid lakes, and some impressive waterfalls particularly inside the newly created national parks that sit on the island. Certainly if you are a nature lover then Sumba has a huge amount to offer, and it is easily reached by taking a boat or plane across from Bali or any of the neighboring islands like Lombok.

While Bali have become households names around the world, Sumba Island is still relatively undiscovered. Relative is a keyword here. Known for its wild coastlines, surfers have been flocking to this island for many years. As a matter of fact, Nihiwatu Resort, the World’s best hotel in 2016 (voted by Travel + Leisure Magazine) which happens to be located here in Sumba, was founded by a couple of surfers.

Destinations:

  • Ratenggaro Traditional Village

With its superb coastal location and reasonably good road infrastructure, Ratenggaro is one of the more commonly visited villages in Sumba. However don’t that let put you off, as it’s rather spectacular, and there was still not another tourist in sight when we stopped by.

Villagers do take advantage of the “invasion”, and we were offered handicrafts to buy, mostly small wooden carvings. The prices are good and there is little hassle. As with other villages in Sumba, the reason for the tall roofs is to honour the Marapu, the ancestor spirits.

Their story is that like many other villages we visited: Ratenggaro was razed by fire and had government assistance to rebuild. The plan was to create a “tourist attraction” by making their roofs the tallest in Sumba. Regardless that it may be purposely manufactured, its marvellously impressive and the villages here treat their houses as any other village — it’s not Disneyland.

  • Bwana Beach

A bunch of superlatives came to mind when we first set eyes on the natural stone arch at Bwanna Beach. Truly a marvel of nature, a narrow stoney cape juts into the turquoise sea and is perforated with an almost perfectly semi-circular aperture. With the crashing waves and pale golden sand surrounding the majestic formation, the scene is captivating.

This beauty, however takes a little effort to find. Locally it’s known by a host of names — variations include Mbwanna, Banna, Radar and “Batu Lubang” (a rock with a hole).

  • Tanjung Mareha

Tanjung Mareha is located between Watu Maladong Beach and Bwanna Beach, from this Cape you will be treated to scenery of two beautiful beaches on Sumba Island. From Tanjung Mareha, you can see the amazing view of the sea and the cliffs at the edge. Tanjung Mareha is one of the best destinations in Southwest Sumba Island

  • Waekuri Lagoon

This is the reason you should come to Sumba. Weekuri Lagoon Sometimes simply referred to as “the salt lake”.

On the extreme southwest coast of Sumba, down a non-signposted rutted track, you’ll find one of our favourite natural sights in Sumba.

The northern end of the crystal clear lake is home to a small coral garden with a few fish and crustaceans. Remember to avoid standing on any coral: It’s a fragile ecosystem here. Scramble over the rocks near the sea for a winning view with so many variations of blue a paint company would have a field day inventing new names.

  • Wairinding Hill

Bukit Wairinding landscape is so beautiful and very charming, making the eyes of visitors as it did not want to blink made. Overlay sprawling savanna it is yellow during the dry season and vice versa green in the rainy season. Visiting Mount Wairinding in two seasons will certainly give a different impression. If visitors arrive in the dry season, between July to October the natural atmosphere there would feel like being in Africa, complete with exotic desert savananya. Another case when visitors come in the rainy season, the atmosphere like in the hills of New Zealand will feel upon arrival at the hilltop. Wairinding hill is the perfect place for visitors who want to enjoy the silence, the silence and beauty that is still very natural.

In addition to the exotic foothill landscapes, the beauty of this hill feels complete with a bunch of local kids on an almost daily Wairinding seen playing around the hilly areas. They will always accompany every visitor who comes to this hill with enthusiasm. Of course they do it sincerely without expecting the slightest reward from the visitors. The smile on their faces very distinctive will leave a lasting impression in the minds of the visitors, and of course it will be difficult forgotten.
Tourism Towards Access Locations

Walakiri Beach

Walakiri beach is one of the beautiful beaches in East Sumba with typical beaches in Sumba that tend to calm, ramps with a stretch of white sand. Located not far from the center of Waingapu City which is about 24 km and can be reached about 30 minutes away, access to Walakiri is very easy that is located not far from the highway towards Melolo, a substantial district in East Sumba. Visitors can rent a motorbike / car from Waingapu to get to Walakiri due to the difficult public transportation within the city in Sumba.

Walakiri has a unique mangrove with a stretch of white sand decorated with coconut palms that provide shade and a comfortable atmosphere as visitors walk down the beach. Another uniqueness of this Walakiri Beach is the presence of 2 different types of sand texture between the sand on the beach and sand in the receding area of the sea. Sand on the beach has a texture like sand beaches in general, the grains are white ivory, while the sand in the area of the former sea receding has a texture like powder or wet cement which then dry and harden. And unique again there is a clear boundary line between the two types of sand.

Walakiri is a very unique beach and is the perfect spot to wait for the sunset. Curious unique? The dwarf mangrove trees located at the tip of the beach are the answer. If the water is pairs of glance nobody makes superior Walakiri Beach, but wait until the water slightly receded. Silhouette of mangrove trees that wiggle like a dancer makes Walakiri into a unique phenomenon and pamper the eyes. As the sun sets, the combination of the twilight sky color and the silhouette of the mangrove trees looks really artistic and photogenic to photograph from all directions.

Tanggedu Waterfall

Sumba also has a number of beautiful waterfalls. One of them is Tanggedu Waterfall in East Sumba. Tanggedu Waterfall is located in Tanggedu Village, Kanatang District, East Sumba Regency.

Tanggedu Waterfall is called Grand Canyon of East Sumba or Twin Canyon of East Sumba. Why is that? Because of the rock cliffs and the water flow is so stunning. People say that this is similar to Grand Canyon in Arizona, United States of America.

This waterfall flowing from the rocky cliffs low. The cliffs of rock flank the flow of blue water and winding. You definitely feel at home in this Tanggedu Waterfall area. This tourist place has beautiful scenery and instagramable spot photos.

And you can selfie with rocky cliff background and flow of water flanked by rock cliffs. Do not forget to take a picture the beautiful waterfall scenery.

Puru Kambera

The savannah is one of the most sought after attractions by travelers coming to Puru Kambera. Grass and trees became a sight not easily forgotten. Especially when the dry season comes. The beauty of the yellowing grass makes it similar to the savanna in Africa.

Puru Kambera also has other unique things, the habitat of wild horse Sumba who clustered and live freely in this savanna. This animal is more often seen in the dry season than during the rain. During that season, the horses in Pura Kambera will be more actively grazing.

Puru Kambera beach has a wide expanse of white sand and clean. This spot is also a choice of traveler to enjoy nature Sumba. In addition to seeing the meadows from a distance, you can also explore the coastline as far as 5 kilometers. Not to mention the beauty of blue sea water and low flying eagles that occasionally perched on a pine tree.

Bukit Persaudaraan Mau Hau

Bukit Persaudaraan Mau Hau presents a panoramic expanse of hills and rice fields of the population that spread wide and beautiful. From the top of the hill, visitors can also see the panorama of Waingapu City and its surroundings accompanied by elegant river Kambaniru seen from a height. The expanse of green and lush landscapes coloring the natural conditions of East Sumba marks the region as a potential farming area.
